Before You Enroll

The definitive pre-enrollment decision tool.

Before You Enroll is a 140-page decision workbook in fillable PDF format for aspiring health and nutrition professionals who are considering investing in a certification and want an independent, realistic picture of the career, costs, opportunities, and challenges before deciding whether and where to invest in certification.

Could $47 save you thousands of dollars in the long run?

Before you hand over tuition, get the process the certification industry doesn't ask you to go through.

Before You Enroll draws on nearly two decades inside the health coaching and nutrition certification industry with perspective from the student, the practitioner, and the instructor. Thousands of enrollments have been observed firsthand. Some built thriving careers. Many didn't.

The workbook walks you through three decisions in order: are you ready, which of the programs you're considering is right for you, and what happens after you're certified.

After completing Before You Enroll, you’ll be able to:

  • Evaluate certification programs with a more critical eye — looking beyond compelling marketing to assess curriculum, credentials, career claims, support, and what a program can realistically prepare you to do.

  • Calculate the true investment required — considering not only tuition, but also the additional time, tools, training, business expenses, and career-building that may come after certification.

  • Make a confident enroll, wait, or walk-away decision — based on your goals, expectations, financial readiness, preferred way of working, and the realities of the career you’re considering.

Before You Enroll empowers you to:

  • Decide if you're ready. The Readiness Profile is a 20-item, 5-dimension self-assessment that gives you a 100-point score, so you know where you honestly stand financially, professionally, and personally before you commit to a program.

  • Evaluate your options. Once you know you're ready, the Certification Scorecard and Decision Matrix let you assess any program against the criteria that actually predict outcomes, and compare multiple programs side by side instead of relying on marketing copy or enrollment pressure. The Financial Reality Calculator maps actual program cost against realistic income timelines, so you're choosing with full financial visibility.

  • Prepare for what comes after. Certification is the start, not the finish. Six practitioner portraits — composite case studies — show how different starting points and decisions actually played out in practice. Two roadmaps carry you from the year before enrollment through the first year of practice.

It also includes four bonus resources, to use alongside and after the core workbook:

  • A Certification Comparison Template for scoring multiple programs side by side on evidence, not sales-page polish

  • A "Before You Quit Your Job" checklist, for anyone considering leaving employment as part of this transition

  • A guided decision journal, with the most thoughtful questions in the entire workbook for when the decision doesn't resolve through analysis alone

  • A pre-enrollment conversation guide, with the questions to ask on an admissions call before you commit

Frequently Asked Questions

I've already chosen a program. Is this workbook still useful? Yes. Before You Enroll isn't only for people who haven't decided. It's also built to pressure-test a decision you've already made. The Certification Scorecard and Financial Reality Calculator work just as well as a gut-check before you commit as they do earlier in the process, and the "after certification" roadmaps are useful no matter when you enroll.

How is this different from just asking questions on an admissions call? Admissions calls are designed to move you toward enrolling — that's their job. This workbook is designed to help you evaluate clearly, independent of any single program's sales process. It also includes a pre-enrollment conversation guide, so the two work together: use the workbook to figure out what matters to you, then use the guide to ask the admissions team the questions that actually get at it.

Is this connected to a specific certification program? No. Before You Enroll isn't affiliated with, sponsored by, or selling any certification program. It's built to help evaluate any program on its merits, using the same criteria across all of them.

What if I decide not to enroll in anything? That's a legitimate outcome. The workbook includes a decision path for "wait" and "walk away," not just "enroll." Deciding this isn't the right time, or the right field, is treated as a successful use of the workbook, not a failed one.

How long does it take to complete? Plan for 6–10 hours of focused work, ideally spread across several sittings. This isn't a document to skim — the five modules include scored assessments, a Financial Reality Calculator, a Certification Scorecard, and a written 90-day action plan, alongside program and financial research you'll do outside the workbook itself. Most people spread that work over several days to a couple of weeks, since some exercises are designed to send you off to look up tuition, evaluate a program's curriculum, or talk it over with a partner before you come back to finish. That's part of the process, not friction.

Is my information private? Yes. Before You Enroll is a fillable PDF that lives on your own device. Nothing you enter is collected, submitted, or stored anywhere else. Your answers stay completely private.

This isn't for you if you've already enrolled and are confident in your choice, or if you're looking for a ranked list of "best" certification programs.
The workbook teaches you how to evaluate, not which one to pick.
Before You Enroll isn’t here to convince you to enroll or talk you out of it. It’s here to make sure that whatever you decide, you know exactly why you’re making the decision, what you’re walking into, and what comes next.
